"An English Family"
Henry Mallett was the youngest son of James Mallett and Elizabeth Crook. He was born in Wilmot Township, Ontario, Canada, in 1844. The above photo was likely taken about 1870, when Henry was about 30 years of age. Before he married, he operated a couple of different farms, including the Mallett homestead, in Wilmot Township. In 1881, Henry married Jean (Jane?) Little from the town of Simcoe, in Ontario, and they purchased a farm in Charlotteville Township, Norfolk County, not far from there. Between 1881 and 1891 Henry and Jean had three children, two boys and a girl; Edmund Bruce, James Florian, and Annie Elizabeth. The girl, Annie, died in infancy. In addition to their own three children, they adopted or otherwise acted as foster parents to a little girl from England, named Florence, or Flossie. Flossie's surname is not known, but she apparently kept in touch with her birth father in England, who came out to Canada to visit her at least once. Sometime around 1891 or later, Henry, his wife, and two young sons pulled up stakes and moved to a farm near Star, Alberta, Canada, about 30 miles outside of Edmonton. At about the turn of the century, Henry's nephew Dr. Richard Henry Smith, son of William Crowe Smith and Henrietta Mallett, was also living and practising medicine in Star. It is not known if they came together, or separately, or which one came west first, but they were definitely in the Star area at the same time. Land records show Dr Smith purchasing 1/4 acres adjacent to or part of the Star town site in 1902, whereas Henry did not purchase his farm until 1906. Dr. Smith later moved into Edmonton, where he came to know Chester Mallett, who had come west from PEI at about the same time. Henry's son James fought in the First World War, married afterward and raised a family in Rolla, British Columbia, which is part of the Peace River Country. Some of his Smith cousins lived in the Peace River area too. James' descendants live in British Columbia and Alberta today. Bruce lived on the home place in Lamont while brother James was at war, but it is not known where he went after that. One account states that he died in a submarine accident, but no record has been found of any military service. Florence married a Millard, and lived in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Canada. Her last known address was Abbey, Saskatchewan.
Henry died in 1913, and Jane in 1914. When Henry died he left all of his property to James, the younger son, and only $5.00 to Bruce. Henry's older sister Ann, who did not marry, lived the last years of her life with Henry and Jane, and followed them to Alberta. She died in 1907. Henry, Jane, and Ann, are buried together in the Lamont cemetery.
