Mallett Family History
"An English Family"

Humphrey Mallett
and
Catherine Balson
"Cloister Hall", Frithelstock Priory Family

Humphrey Mallett was born about 1756-58. He may have been born in Sheepwash, North Devon, England, to a father called Henry, but this has not been verified. A letter written about 1920 by Walter Mallett (see below) states that Humphrey "was the son or the grandson of Hugh Mallet, who owned a small manor called Ashe, near Iddesleigh, N. Devon". There is no evidence to support this assertion either.

Humphrey married Catherine (Catharine, Katharine) Balson in Frithelstock, North Devon, in 1784. In the marriage record there is a notation beside Humphrey’s name: "bs", which stands for "but a sojourner", meaning he was living in Frithelstock at the time of the marriage, but was not from there. Humphrey and Catherine may have lived at Frithelstock Priory when they were first married.

They had 7 children who lived:

  • Humphrey 1785
  • John 1787
  • Henry 1790
  • Catherine 1793
  • William 1796
  • James 1799
  • George 1807

The first three children were born in Frithelstock. The next four were born on a farm called Birchill, in Langtree parish.

Catherine, William and James all emigrated to Canada between 1832 and 1842.

Humphrey Sr., Humphrey Jr. And George were all farmers in Langtree parish. They seem to have been quite prosperous, usually having 300 acres or more and employing several agricultural labourers and domestic servants. Humphrey Sr. and Catherine, along with Humphrey Jr. And George, their wives and some of their children are all buried in the Langtree parish churchyard. Humphrey Jr.’s son James was a farmer too, and lived in "Cloister Hall", at Frithelstock Priory at the turn of the century. He and his wife Caroline are buried in the churchyard there.

Henry was a Carpenter or Builder or Ironmonger or all three, married Mary Brimmacombe, and had lots of children. They lived at some point in Barnstaple, where they had a shop in the High Street, at some point on Jersey, where Mary is buried, and possibly in London for a time. Mary Thorne Mallett, a daughter of Henry and Mary, was persuaded to join the Mormon church by missionairies of that faith in Jersey. She and her sister Catherine left Jersey and travelled to Salt lake city, Utah, USA, in the 1850s to join the followers of Brigham Young there. Other offspring of Henry and Mary, specifically Henry (1819), Elizabeth (1820) and Frederick (1826) are thought to have emigrated to Australia.

John was a Clockmaker and Jeweler who also had a shop in the High Street in Barnstaple. He was followed in the business by his son John, whose son Walter succeeded him. Walter and his father moved the business from Barnstaple to Bath at some point, and Walter later transformed it into quite a successful antique business, "Mallett Antiques" which is still in operation under that name in the New Bond Street in London, but no longer in the hands of the Mallett family. The last Mallett to be associated with this business was Francis Mallett, who died in 1955.
