Mallett Family History
"An English Family"

George Mallett,
Jane Rainee Davison
and
Annie McDonald
William/George Mallett farm Family

Last Update: April 18, 2001

The above photo, taken in the spring of 1997, shows the farm which at one time was owned by William Mallett, and later by his son George. It is located on Graham's Rd, Lot 20, Queen's Co. PEI. George was not the oldest of William's children, though he was the oldest of the second family. Upon the death of his father in 1857, and his mother in 1859, George took over the farm and became the head of the family; some of his siblings being still quite young. He is identified as head of household in the 1861 census despite the fact that his two older half brothers were still living at home. This is partially explained by the 1881 census which states that (George's half brother) Edwin was of "unsound mind". He was still living with George at that time. The other half brother William shows up in the 1881 census too, working as a farm labourer on a neighbouring farm.

George married twice, but all of his children were born to his first wife, Jane Rainee Davison, whom he married about 1862. They had 7 children, 5 sons and 2 daughters:

  • The oldest son Herbert stayed on the island, and became a farmer and grist mill operator. He married Lucy Ann Taylor in 1885, and they had 5 children, 3 daughters and 2 sons, who all married and stayed on the island. The mill is gone now. Herbert's son Ira continued farming, as did his son Alvin. Alvin was the "last of his line" on the island. No descendant of William Mallett carrying the Mallett surname remains on PEI today.

  • The second son, Joseph, who was married, left the island and was known to be living in North Dakota, USA, as late as 1933.

  • The third son Gavin also left the island and migrated to Colorado, USA, where he worked as a carpenter. He was married and had 3 children, but died young, the result of work related illness. He came back to PEI to die, and is buried with his father and other relatives in the North Granville cemetery. After his death his wife returned to Colorado with the children, and his descendants still live there today.

  • The fourth son, Henry, stayed on the island, married, became a farmer, and had 2 children. His only son, Edison, fought in the Great War, brought back a war bride, and moved to British Columbia, Canada, shortly afterward. He died in Nanaimo, British Columbia, in 1980.

  • The fifth son, Chester, married Euphemia Ann Corbett, and had 3 children. Chester took over the family farm for a time, but about the turn of the century, he and his family moved to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where his descendants continue to live today.

  • Daughter Lily Ann married Henry T Burgoyne and remained on the island.

  • Charlotte Jane married Alex Beaton and moved to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

George, his 2 wives, his two half brothers and most of his offspring who stayed in PEI are buried in the North Granville cemetery, not far from the original homestead on Graham's Road.
