Mallett Family History
"An English Family"

1066 and all that

Provided here is the full "official" lineage of William Malet of 1066 fame, 30 generations in all. The direct descent is taken from Burke's Landed Gentry, 1972 edition. This line is bolstered by additional information from Arthur Malet's "Notices of an English Branch of the Malet Family", and from the Iddesleigh, North Devon, parish registers. Included in the tree are:

  • William "Companion of the Conqueror" (1066)
  • Robert, "Lord of Eye" (Domesday 1086)
  • Robert of Curry Mallet (c 1100) (there's some doubt about this)
  • William, of Curry Mallet, "Magna Carta Surety" (c 1200)
  • "Malet of Enmore", beginning with Baldwin (c 1150)
  • "Mallet of Ash", beginning with Richard (c 1500).
The "Malets of St Audries" missing from the tree at the moment, begin one generation earlier than the "Mallets of Ash". Both the Ash and St Audries lines are extant, the others have all died out in the male line.

The information about "THE" Mal(l)ets is provided because it may be of interest to a number of researchers, and anyone who can find a connection to that tree will find their research greatly enhanced.
