Sports
Thomas dontated the Mallett Cup to the Cardiff and District Union (Rugby) in 1894. It is still played for today. He enjoyed sports such as rugby in winter and cricket in the summer. He used to enjoy talking to his grandson Compton about sport.
Below is a quote from the Western Mail newspaper (Cardiff) dated Thursday February 4th 1897.
'The worthy president, Mr T.H. Mallett, on November 9th, 1893, presented a challenge cup, value twenty guineas, to the committee for competition among the senior clubs under the title of 'Mallett Challenge Cup'. On the occasion of the public presentation of the cup, the late Mr. W. M. Shepherd was in the chair'
The Mallet Cup was first contended for on Saturday 14th April 1894 at the Harlequin Ground, Roath. The first finalists were Canton and Cardiff Reserves; with the latter winning a very close fought contest. The cup is still played for today.
Below is a quote from the Western Mail newspaper dated Monday 16th April 1894:
‘The final of the Mallett Cup on the Harlequins ground (Roath) played before a large crowd, provided a close and interesting encounter. All things considered the Reserves were a bit lucky in winning. Certainly the score does not represent the true state of the play. For not only did Canton have as much of the play as Cardiff but they also had quite as many opportunities for scoring. The most notable example was when Jones attended by Keepings ran through the Cardiff defence and down to full back. Nothing could have stopped a score on this occasion had not Jones slipped, or passed to Keepings a second or so earlier.
Forward, Canton were distinctly the smarter lot. They secured the ball quite as often as the Cardiff eight; whilst in wheeling they were, without question infinitely superior, and time after time when good kicking by the Cardiff quartet sent play down to the Canton line, really clever work by the Canton forwards drove it back.
Briefly summarised it was the Cardiff backs that won them this game. Score: Cardiff Reserves 1 Goal 1 Try 3 Minors: Canton 2 Minors’.

The report in the Western Mail dated Tuesday 27th April 1926 (front page left hand side) read:
‘MALLETT - On Sunday, April 26th., at 126, Miskin Street, Thomas Henry (beloved father of J.H., W.T., and Tom Mallett, and Mrs. E.R. Evans and Mrs. J. Hale), after short illness, aged 86 years. Funeral Thursday, April 29th, leaving 16, South Luton Place for All Saints' Church, Three p.m.; Gentlemen only’.
N.B. Apparently it was common in those days for women not to attend funerals.
The report in the Western Mail dated Friday 30th April 1926 (page 9 top right hand side read:
‘Funeral of Mt. T. Mallett, Cardiff
The funeral took place on Thursday of Mr. Tom Mallett of 16, South Luton Place, Cardiff. A service was conducted at All Saints' Church by the Rev. Canon D. Ellis Jones (vicar of All Saints'), who also performed the last rites at the Cardiff Cemetery. The chief mourners were Mr. J. H. Mallett, Mr. W. T. Mallett, Mr. Tom Mallett, Mrs. Hale, Mrs. Evans, Mr. Evans, Mr. Hale, Mrs. J. Mallett, Mrs. W. Mallett, Mrs. Tom Mallett, and Master Ray Mallett, Mr. Ivor Evans, Mr. J.W. Clark, Mr. Compton Mallett. Six nephews of the dead man acted as bearers (Messrs. H. Evans, Ralph Mallett, J. C. Mallett, S.A. Mallett, Howell Evans and Wilfred Evans).
The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Augustine J. Stone, 5, Working Street, Cardiff’.
N.B. I think there are two errors in this newspaper report. Firstly 16, South Luton Place was where Thomas’ son Jack lived. Secondly they mention 6 nephews, whereas they were actually grandsons.
Mr. J. H. Mallett would be Thomas Henry's son Jack,
Mr. W. T. Mallett would be T.H.'s son Willie,
Mr. Tom Mallett would be T.H.'s son Tom,
Mrs. Evans would be T.H.'s daughter Murray,
Mrs. Hale would be T.H. daughter Edith,
Mr. Evans would be Murray's husband Rees Evans,
Mr. Hale would be Edith's husband Joe Hale,
Mrs. J. Mallett would be Sophie (Jack's wife),
Mrs. W. Mallett would be Sarah Ann (Willie’s wife),
Mrs.Tom Mallett would be Haddie (Tom's wife),
Master Ray Mallett ,
Mr. Ivor Evans would be T.H.'s grandson (Murray & Rees' son),
Mr. J.W. Clark would probably be May's husband (T.H.'s granddaughter), but should read W E Clark,
Mr. Compton Mallett would be T.H.'s grandson (Jack & Sophies's son)
The following grandsons were bearers:
H. Evans would probably be Harold Evans (Murray & Rees' son),
Ralph Mallett (Tom & Haddie's son),
J. C. Mallett would be Joseph Clifford (Willie & Sarah's son),
S.A. Mallett would probably be Stan Mallett (Jack & Sophie's son),
Howell Evans (Murray & Rees' son),
Wilfred Evans (Murray & Rees' son).
