179 | ![]() | Henry Worth Memorial This is a wall monument of stone, painted to resemble marble, of Henry Worth 1606 in civil (Elizabethan) dress. His two wives are kneeling - Mary Malet (c1537-1581) & Bridget Fry c1553-1637). The Malet arms are clearly visible in the upper left hand corner. It is located in the North-East Corner on the north wall of St. Mary's Church, Washfield, Devon, England. The dedication is in Latin but a translation in English follows, taken from Francis Smith's (MBE) booklet "St. Mary the Virgin Church, Washfield". A chalice was given to St. Mary's Church by their descendants in 1686. Henry Worth, Armiger, lies beneath this tomb, (Henry 1534-1606) Worth distinguished in his grandfathers for thirty ages. His worthy virtues and worthy constancy shine, his worthy faith and worthy love of religion. No one was more upright than he was, nor a greater lover of what is right; outstandingly deserving and worthy in name and in fact, he passed away not by dying, he only disappeared and goes away worthy to be numbered in the heavens above. He lives in his son Henry and his grandson Henry so that the stock of the ancient house being renewed may not fall. He died August 3rd in the year of the Lord 1606, of his age 72.
