As per BM email, Nov 6, 2000:
I have the original Indenture of Apprenticeship document of Henry Mallett when he was apprenticed to Robert Taylor Hookway of Bideford, as a joiner and house carpenter from the 26 April 1869 . The accountant who drew up the document spelt Williams fathers name with two "Ts" at the beginning of the document. whilst Henry's signature has one "T". At the bottom of the document the accountant who drew up the document, has put " the mark of William Mallett (two T's being used that time).
It was very common in those days as a great many people could not read or write in the rural communities and relied on the "educated" people to write for them who very often spelt things phonetically.
An interesting thing to note is that Samuel Bray the accountant who drew up the document originally put John Mallett then crossed out John and put William.
The document states William Mallett of Alwington in the County of Devon.
The apprenticeship was completed on 30 May 1873.
Henry was forbidden to marry during the period of his apprenticeship
