Name Catharine MALLETT Birth 28 Jul 1793 Langtree, Devon, England
Gender Female Note - This family emigrated to Canada between 1841 and 1853 I think. I find Richard and Mrs Richard in Beverly Twp in 1861. There are no children at home with them. He is 78 and described as a "Gentleman". She is 68 which is the correct age for Catherine. There are two young Bond families also in Beverly Twp in 1861, Henry and Edwin. They are also in the 1871 index for Beverly. I assume they are both sons. There are many Bonds buried in Sheffield cemetery in Beverly Twp, including Richard and Catherine. there is an Edwin too, but no Henry. I think they were still in England in 1841, because I found a Caroline Bond living with Humphrey Mallett Jr in that year. I will try to place the family in Woolfardisworthy in 1841. I believe Catherine was the "aunt from Beverly" mentioned in the 1864 letter. One of the Bond farms shown in the 1875 atlas is on the border with Puslinch, so this is likely how Eliza Ann met Thomas Paddock. She would have been visiting her Aunt, and he would perhaps have been working and living in the same area. He is described as "a Farmer from Beverly" when he marries Eliza Ann in 1853.
The following names are in Sheffield cemetery:
A.E., A. Earl, Angus McKenzie, Catherine, Edwin, Edwin James, Eileen, Grace J, James E, Jane, John H, Lavinia, Lavinia E, Margaret, Margaret E, Margaret M, Mary E, McKenzie, Oswald (DDS), Richard, W.H., William N. Some appear to be duplicates. Sheffield is just south of Galt on Hwy 8.
Edwin and Henry are listed as children because I found them in the census, and now that I've been to the archives and looked at the abstracts for Beverly I see that both of them were directly involved with each other and Richard in land transactions, sometimes involving the same property which Richard himself owned. This suggests a familial relationship. James and William were found only in the land transactions, not the census, but again they were all involved in various transactions with one another, so I'm assuming a familial relationship for them too. Edwin seems to have been the family banker, he often held the mortgage. Caroline is assumed to be their child because she was with Humphrey Jr in the 1841 census. Arabella comes out of the IGI, being born to Richard and Catherine Bond. I have yet to find the family all together anywhere.
According to the writeup in the Wellington County historical atlas, the family came to Canada in 1839, and all of them were born in England.

- She signs her name Catherine, which shows she is literate, and gives a clue as to how the mother's name should be spelled, since it is seen variously with a 'K' and/or with an 'a' in place of the first e. Catherine and John Balson witnessed. Balson is the mother's maiden name, so they are likely cousins.
