    • When his father died in 1740 he was still an apprentice. According to his will two Linen Drapers from London attested that they knew him for 14 years, meaning that he was 14 when they first knew him, which was, perhaps, when he started his apprenticeship.

    • His actual death occurred between the dates May 10 1750, when the will was written, and May 25 1750 when it was probated. he mentions his brother John but not his brother Hugh, all of his sisters but Elizabeth, and not his mother who was still alive, but barely.

      There is no mention of any wife or children, so he must have died a bachelor.

      Interestingly he provides a legacy for "my dear friend Mrs Cannington". A "Mrs Elizabeth Cannington now living with me" is provided with a legacy in father Hugh's will.

    • It is not certain that Hugh Mallett, Grocer, of Exeter is the same Hugh Mallett that married Mary Glanville, or the Hugh Mallett born in Iddesleigh in 1681, but the age fits, and Hugh the Grocer's wife's name was indeed Mary. One might expect also that the second son of a gentleman, as Hugh was, might be apprenticed to a tradesman so that he could earn a respectable living, since he would not inherit his father's estate, and Saint Peter Cathedral would be an appropriate venue for the marriage of a gentleman's son.

      However, Hugh, when referring to his children in his will, mentions that their grandmother's name was Mary Talbott, so one might suppose that Hugh's wife was also Mary Talbott and not Mary Glanville - but Hugh or Mary's mother might have remarried, and Mary could have been born Talbott but married someone called Glanville before she married Hugh...
