| 521 | 1937 Obituary Wagga Wagga Advertiser December 9 1937 Mrs E Nest The death occurred at her residence in Coolamon yesterday morning of one of the oldest and most highly respected residents of Coolamon and district, Mrs Elizabeth Nest of Wallace St., Coolamon at the grand old age of 93 years. Mrs Nest who had lived in Coolamon for the past 41 years was born in Liverpool (Eng) and came to Australia with her parents when she was 10 years of age. She was a daughter of Mr and Mrs George Needham of Brucedale, near Wagga. The sailing ship in which Mrs Nest came to Australia was the Phoenix and in those days it took six months for it to come from England to Australia. On arrival in Australia Mrs Nest, with her parents, went to the Ballarat gold diggings. She often spoke of Thunderbolt, the bushranger and was well acquainted with the happenings of interest which took place in the early days. After residing for a period at Ballarat the Needham family came to Brucedale. While she was out riding with her father at Brucedale one day, his horse bolted and he was thrown against a tree and killed. This occurred about 77 years ago. After residing for about 23 years at Brucedale Mrs Nest married Mr William James Nest who predeceased her 30 years ago. After her marriage she and her husband went to reside at Young for 20 years and then went to Coolamon where she lived until her death. Mrs Nest followed nursing and was well known for her ability in this profession, especially in the days when transport was by horseback, spring cart and later sulky. She is survived by one son, Mr Sidney Nest of Coolamon and one daughter Mr(sic) James Keys of Coolamon. The funeral will leave her residence at 3 o'clock this afternoon for the Coolamon cemetery. Coolamon Cemetery Inscription Elizabeth Nest died 8 December 1932. Have copy of death certificate. | NEEDHAM, Elizabeth (I8095)

| 522 | 1953 (March Quarter) Death Entry: COWLING, Edward, 85, Derby, 2a, 325 Petty Officer in Royal Navy. Family of three occupying 2 rooms in 1901. Edward became a Stoker/Chief Stoker in the Royal Navy, joining on 18 May 1887 for a 12 year engagement, and leaving on 29 May 1899. At some stages he worked alongside his elder brother John. The following is an extract from St. Agnes Town School Log Book, 1865-1887: November 17-21, 1873 - Admitted infants from other school, (1) T Smith, (2) E Cowling, (3) T McNeil, (4) J Lawry. These are not so forward as those sent in last year from same school. [From his age, this is thought to be Edward.] June 1-6, 1875 - Sent Edward Cowling home the same day [Thursday] having suspected that he had the measles about him. The results of the Drawing Examination for 1879 show that Edward achieved 'Excellent' in the 1st Grade Freehand, and likewise achieved 'G' in the 1880 examination. On the 1901 Census he is living at 6, Fernhurst Road, Fulham, with his wife Evelyn and daughter Evelyn Gladys, and, by 1904, lived in Hurlingham, Fulham, by which time their daughter, Margaret Ethel (known as Madge) had been born. After the war he worked as an engineer at Lots Road Power Station, Chelsea. At sometime 'Uncle Ned' lived at Wheal Dreath Cottage, Beacon Road, St. Agnes. The following is a brief obituary of Edward Cowling: 'NATIVE OF ST. AGNES.—The death occurred last week at his home in Derby, of Mr. Edward Cowling, aged 86 a member of an old St. Agnes family, and late of Wheal Dreath Cottage Higher Bal, St. Agnes. Mr. Cowling, the fifth son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Cowling, formerly of Bank House, Churchtown, served his apprenticeship with the late Mr. T. Lockett, a former blacksmith of Peter- ville, St. Agnes, and at the aged of 18 he joined the Navy. He served in Australia in the Cleopatra and retired after 12 years' service. Subsequently he went to London where, until his retirement at 65, he was on the staff of an electric power station at Chelsea. Mr. and Mrs. Cowling then returned to St. Agnes, where they con- tinued to live until about six years ago, when they moved to Derby to be near their only child (Mrs. F. Hartree). Mrs. Cowling was formerly Miss Evelyn Solomon, also of St. Agnes[.] Six years ago Mr. and Mrs. Cowling cele- brated their golden wedding. Mr. Cowling is survived by three sisters, Mrs. J. Down and Miss F. Cowling (St. Agnes), and Mrs. W. Sherman (Redruth).' (The newspaper from which the cutting came is unknown.) | COWLING, Edward (I3663)
