  It is assumed that James Mallett and Mary Ann (Harford) Stone got together in an unmarried but conjugal fashion sometime between 1861 and 1863, when Robert Jr was born. In the 1861 Census, though married, Mary Ann Stone was living with her parents William and Hannah Harford at 7 Cheese Lane, Bristol. She was described as "Daughter", and was employed as a Flax Worker. James in turn was living with his parents at 11 Cheese Lane, just a couple of doors down. He was single and employed as a Labourer. In 1871 James and Mary Ann were described as Husband and Wife with 2 children, though they did not legally marry until 1876, after Ignatius Stone, Mary Ann's nominal (and legal) husband died.
