    • John is described as a widower in the 1891 census, and is living with his Aunt Elizabeth Chamings and a cousin Alfred G Chamings. There are no Reed children in the household. The situation is the same in the 1881 census with the exception of the nephew. His first wife may have been Elizabeth Jane Sweet, whom a John Brent Reed married in Bideford in 1869. Whoever his first wife was, it appears there may not have been any children.

      An entry June 21 1894 in the North Devon Journal announced the marriage of Mary to John Brent Reed of Torrington. They were married in Frithelstock Church. James was described as Church Warden.
