    • Richard is recorded arriving in San Francisco on 13 Aug 1852 on the steamer Columbia from Panama (source: Rasmussen, Louis J., San Francisco Ship Passenger Lists, v. IV. pp. 72-4). He was apparently mining for gold in the Auburn, California area for the years 1852 to1860 when he left the US to return to England to collect Harriet. Quite when he decided that feeding miners might be more profitable than gold mining is not clear but his occupation was 'Miller' when he returned with Harriet. He left the US in either 1859 or in early 1860- early enough to avoid being listed in the 1860 census. He also applied for US naturalization in 1858, possibly to ease his re-entry to the US once he had collected Harriet. The beginning of the US Civil War may have provided other reasons to have an established US domicile when planning a trip back to the UK. It seems that this RM-HS marriage was arranged by mail. In the late 1850s Calif population of Europeans was 75-80% male, so such efforts and expense to obtain a wife were understandable.

      He then traded as a Miller in San Francisco with National and Golden Gate Mills until 1888. He lived in Portland, Oregon, for several years. The San Francisco fire of 1906 destroyed the house in which he had lived (1418 Powell Street).
