- Carpenter/Joiner
- CS says that Willy started apprenticeship as a carpenter/joiner with Samuel Shepton on Aug 1/83 with 'the consent of Thomas Henry Mallett, his father.'
- CS : "When he retired from Shepton's he had become builders' foreman. His daughter Eva told my mother that when he gave up his job he was earning just 2 pounds a week. Willie continued to work for Mr. Shepton in his later years, as he collected the rents from property's Mr. Shepton owned in Tiger Bay, a notorious place at Cardiff Dockland. Willie used to go to Tiger Bay by taxi. On one occasion he took my mother, although she did not dare get out of the car once they arrived at their destination.
Willie and Sarah also ran a post office and sweet shop in Caerphilly Road, Cardiff. My mother recalls the tins of Nuttall's Mintoes, together with Fox's Glacier Mints with the distinctive polar bear on the wrapper."

- CS : Willie was badly injured when he tried to stop a horse which had bolted while drawing a heavy wagon. The horse knocked him down and the wagon went over his chest, crushing his lung. It was as a result of this accident that his wife Sarah miscarried their baby. Willie was away from work for a year and suffered with chest problems for the rest of his life.
Because of his bad chest and constant asthma, Willie could not have gas when he needed his teeth extracted. Over the years he "worked them" with his fingers.

- CS : Willie was the organist at All Saint's Church in Cardiff for many years. He was given a clock and a silver cake-stand on his retirement.
He was also a forester (a Society that did good work in the community). He was also a member of the Oddfellows Society.
He collected clocks of all descriptions and adored chimney and cuckoo clocks in particular. They all told a different time and, therefore, chimed at different times.
CS : An article from RL :
In 1903, W.T. Mallett, of 95, Glenroy Street, Cardiff, became Secretary of Court 'St. Francis', No. 8380 of the Ancient Order of Foresters Friendly Society. At the time members met at St. Saviour’s schoolroom, Carlisle Street. The Court was a relatively new one, having been established in 1894, and in 1903 there were some 26 members. The meeting place changed in 1908, following the establishment of the Foresters' Jubilee Institute in Charles Street.
1910 was a busy year for Bro Mallett. Court 'St. Francis' amalgamated with Court 'British Volunteer', No. 6561, which also met at the Foresters Institute. W.T. Mallet became secretary of the combined court. This had about 90 members.
Taking on the adult court, he also became Secretary of the 'British Volunteer' Juvenile Foresters Society. He took an active part in this aspect of forestry, becoming secretary of the Cardiff Juvenile Foresters Society (of which his own become a part) before 1920. He continued in this capacity until 1932. During the period, there is evidence that he was involved with the Juvenile Propaganda Committee of the District.
Also in 1910 he became Treasurer of the Cardiff female Court, Court 'Maid Marian', No. 8307. For at least the next thirty years he continued lo hold this position.
The following year, in October 1911, be began a year of office as the elected District Chief Ranger of the Cardiff United District.
Around this time there was a change in the home address from 95 to 71 Glenroy Street. It is not clear if this was an actual move, or a renumbering of existing houses. In c1930 Bro W.T. Mallett's address changed again, this time to Ael-y-Bryn, Caerphilly Road, Birchgrove.
Bro W.T. Mallett continues as Court No. 6561 Secretary until c1930 when J.C. Mallett took on the post. The latter held the position until at least 1949. In 1951 the Court merged with another in the District. J.C. Mallett lived at 71, Glenroy Street and was active at District level, being on the Committee of management in 1938.
The chain of office being worn by W.T. Mallett in the photograph is that of the District Chief Ranger thus dating it as between October 1910 and October 1911. One of the other officers in the photograph is likely to be Bro. Tom Chappell, who was a prominent Cardiff forester of the period.
Another member with the name of Mallett active in the period was J.H. Mallett, of Court No. 5394. He was District Chief Ranger in 1918-19, and subsequently became senior Trustee of the District, a position he was holding in 1928.

While bringing up his children, which must have been a costly business, he did well in managing to buy a house in Glenroy Street, Roath, Cardiff. Later he bought another house, which was 71, Glenroy Street. Whether he sold the first to buy the second is not known.
It is interesting to note that in 1901 Willie's sister-in-law Eliza Randall was living at 71, Glenroy Street in Cardiff with her husband Samuel. Did William & Sarah Ann buy the house from them?

Will:
The address on his will is 3, Rhydhelig Avenue, Caerphilly Road, Cardiff. The date of the will is 9 Sept 1941. His profession is retired builder's foreman.
William Fred Skinner (solicitor) of 5, Windsor Place, Cardiff was the sole executor.
Willie gave:
- 3, Rhydhelig Avenue to his daughter Constance Evelyn Louise Jones and any furniture that was in the property after making the gifts mentioned later in the will.
- Initially he wanted to leave 71, Glenroy Street to his son Joseph Clifford Mallett. This was then revoked and he wanted the house to be sold and the money to be given out as follows: £25 to his sister-in-law Alice Hale as a token of his deep appreciation for her kindness during his long illness. The rest to be divided between his son Joseph Clifford Mallett and two of his daughters, Edith Jane May Clarke and Eva Victoria Williams in equal shares. He expressly wished the extra money to be given to his daughters for their untiring duties to him during his long illness.
N.B. My mother recalls "The house was not sold. It cost £240 when William Thomas Mallett bought it, so May, Eva and Alice just took £80 each from Cliff and he kept the house, which was very generous of them. Alice lived with Cliff and Annie".
- Thirty pounds to his granddaughter Joan Williams.
- His church presentation grandson clock to his daughter Mrs Clarke.
- Two angle cabinets and Foresters silver tea service to his daughter Mrs Geler Jones.
- His presentation Juvenile Society Clock to Mrs Gladys Martin.
- His silver cake stand presentation received from the choir and oval mirror and cut glass base to his daughter Eva Victoria Williams.
- His piano, mahogany table and oak fire screen to his daughter Constance Evelyn Louise Jones.
- The Brigade Clock and military figures to his daughter-in-law Mrs Florence Mallett.
- His District Chief Rangers Certificates, his photographs, mahogany writing desk and his gold watch with Foresters Presentation chain.
Any money that was left after paying for the funeral was to be divided into 5 equal parts. Each of his daughters would receive a fifth - (Mrs Clarke, Mrs Geler Jones, Mrs Gladys Martin and Mrs Eva Williams). Out of the remaining fifth, thirty pounds would go to his daughter-in-law Mrs Florence Mallett - the rest of this fifth was divided between the children of his deceased son who were May, Violet, Billy, Victor, and Sylvia.
