SW Group 1 UKC 1881 N Death 30 Jul 1917 At Sea
[2, 3] - Bruce was an able seaman aboard the Steamer "Shimosa" out of Liverpool, en route to Canada, when it was torpedoed and sunk 220 miles NW1/2W of Eagle Island (55° 14'N, 15° 05'W) by The German uboat U46, under the command of Captain Leo Hillebrand. All hands, 17 in all, were lost.
It is not known how Bruce came to be in the Merchant Marine, given that he had signed on with the British Army just a few months earlier, but he did state that he had 6 months of training with the RNCVR on his attestation papers, so perhaps the army directed him there.
