George MALLETT
-
Name George MALLETT Birth 27 May 1807 Langtree, Devon, England
Gender Male Note - In the 1841 census George had taken over "Birchill" farm, his father having passed away in 1838. He had 3 Ag Labs and 3 female servants plus one more Ag Lab and his wife. The mother Catherine lived with them, 84 years of age. Caroline, John, Matilda and William were listed as children. Mary Ann must have died, probably as a baby, since no tombstone was found for her in Langtree.
The wife's name is spelled as it is in the marriage record and on the tombstone, which may have been erected by her family. It says she is the daughter of John and Mary Furse of East Putford Barton. I have also found Thomsin and Thomasin and Thomzin.
George and Thomazin are buried in Langtree. Death dates are taken from the tombstones. Thomazin's birth date is calculated backward from death date and age given on the tombstone. Children's birthdates are taken from the parish register.
George died in 1848, according to the tombstone found in Langtree. The 1851 census shows Thomasin (spelled that way in the record) living in Bideford, occupation Grocer, at a place called "Butt Gardens". Caroline, 17, "Assistant"; Matilda, 13, "Scholar"; and Joseph, 8, "Scholar" are in her household. The three other children are living in 3 different households, all in Bideford:
Mary "H" Mallett, 16, "Grocers Daur", is a visitor in the house of Harriet Marshall, also of Butt Gardens.
John Mallett, 14, "Drapers App(rentice)", is an "Appr" in the house of Willm. Villacott, Draper, of High Street, Bideford.
William Mallett, 11, "Scholar", is a lodger in the house of Charles Blackwell, School Master of "Strand Waterloo House", Bideford.
All of the children are unmarried. All of their ages correspond with the christening dates I have from the parish register. Thomasin dies in 1853. It will be a trick to try to find the family in the 1861 census. Most of the children will not be old enough to take care of themselves. They will almost certainly be split up. The next best step will perhaps be to look at the civil indexes for marriages.
According to the 1881 census, there are several possibilities for husbands for Mary Ann:
Mary A Copp (b 1835 Langtree) and Caleb Copp
Mary A Hutchings (b 1833 Langtree) and Frederick Hutchings
Mary Walter (b 1832 Langtree) and Philip Walter
