    • The only record of this Alfred is the 1881 census where he is listed as Grandson to Stephen Chappel Davey Mallett. He has been attached to the family of Stephen John Malett because he was the only one among Stephen Chappel etc.'s children known to have children, and who was living in Pancras at the time that Alfred was born there. The only problem is that his age as given in the census (12) conflicts with the birth of his (possible) sister Sarah. If that age was correct, then he should have shown up with this family in 1871, but he didn't.

      His and Mary's ages are not consistent with their birthdates, but everything else fits. Stephen was born in Devonport, living in Henry St Pancras, and a Piano Maker, with a daughter Mary. All details consistent with previous censuses.

      The grandson Alfred is unknown, and hasn't been found in any census other than this one, but he seems a likely fit with the Stephen Jr family because of his age, place of birth (Pancras), and because Stephen Jr is the only son known to have a family.

    • Catherine Shannon is the only Catherine found in the Civil Indexes who married a Stephen Mallett. The name Catherine is consistent with the wife of Stephen in the 1881 census. That Stephen's age (33) is consistent with this Stephen.

      The family has not been found in any census after 1911, but Catherine and two of the sons were found in 1911, still living in Pancras, so the family was likely there all along.
