He was single, working aboard a steamer, when he jumped ship in Portland, Oregon, where he worked for some Mallett relatives that are unknown to his descendants. He worked in a store in Portland for a couple of years, then found his way to Seattle and lived aboard a house boat with 5 of his buddies. He started a family and spent the rest of his life in Seattle working most of of the time as a salesman.
