- In the 1911 census Walter "Melville" states that he and his "wife" Rachel had been married for 14 years (1897). Coincidentally this is the same year that Walter Mallett's first wife Kate was declared a lunatic, and was (probably) admitted to the London County Lunatic Asylum. No record has been found of a marriage between Rachel Bumfrey and Walter Melville, but there is plenty of evidence that shows that the two people involved here were in fact Walter Mallett and Rachel Bumfrey. His age, place of birth and occupation are consistent from his marriage to Kate Barnard to the 1901 and 1911 censuses. The first 2 "Melville" children were born to a mother with the surname "Bumphrey" (the rest of the children's mother was either "Humphreys" or "Humphries"), and of course there is a record of Walter Mallett marrying Rachel Bumfrey in 1920, after Walter's first wife died.
