  Rex joined the Royal Army Service Corps in 1938. He was a Corporal and his service record number was 57418. He landed on the beaches on the third day of D-Day. He was up on the top of a hut when German planes got through and shelled the beach. He had to go into the hut and it collapsed on him. He was pulled out of the hut – he had some kind of head injury and then had to continue on going in and out of the trenches. he didn’t remember too much more than that but was found and brought back to the ship, mute and shell shocked. He didn’t speak for 6 weeks. He remembered the intense noise which he seemed to relive. After he recovered he was sent to Nigeria for the rest of the war. Rex had gotten married in 1939 before the war, and brought his wife home to stay with his parents during the war. She lived with his family but started to go out with the Germans. There was a confrontation in the family regarding her seeing the Germans when her husband was fighting in the British Army. So Margaret left her in laws home and continued to go out with Germans. It is believed that she had a baby fathered by a German solider. After liberation she quickly left the island. Rex got divorced after the war. He died in July 1988 in England at the age of 70.
