- It is not certain when they may have opened at the current location in Truro, but this is the family that started "Mallett's Home Hardware" there. It was "Truro's oldest family business" when it was sold in 2005. The Mallett family had been in the Ironmongery/Hardware business since about 1880. It seems to have been in Bertie's family, since it was his grandson who was the Managing Director of the store in 2005 when it was sold to Home Hardware Southwest Ltd. of Barnstaple. The family was living in Kenwyn, just outside of Truro, in 1901.

End of an era for Truro store

MALLETT'S hardware store in Truro will continue its tradition of family trading despite being sold off to a Devon company.
It was the oldest family business in Truro until sold off in December to Home Hardware Southwest Ltd, based in Barnstaple. The Devon firm was founded over 40 years ago and supplies over 350 retailers throughout the southern half of the country.
Mallett's director Robert Mallett said last week that despite the sell-off the new owners had no plans to radically change the store and the same staff will stay. It will be run on similar lines so that customers can expect to find the same service.
Truro born and bred Robert praised his staff this week for their loyalty over the years and said it was a very emotional moment when he had to break the news to his employees.
"I was very near to tears but the staff have been absolutely brilliant," he said. "I think I have always tried to be a very fair boss and I have been rewarded with loyalty as a result. We have always felt like an extended family."
Robert, MD since 1972, said that he thought that at the age of 58 it was time for retirement. "You can't go on forever and I have been planning this for two or three years now." He said he had been trading with Home Hardware for the past 20 years so it was the obvious choice for a company takeover. "Over 50% of our stock comes from them," he said. As a result the names on the shop front Mallett's Home Hardware will continue.
Many of Robert's staff have been with him for many years. He still employs two 83-year-olds who have worked there - now part time - for 30 and 25 years.
Roger says that he will continue with the new owners as a consultant until the end of this month and then plans a long break in the West Indies, after which he will return to Truro to enjoy his retirement.
