- Howard spent the last few years of his life at the Marian Villa in London, Ontario, and died quite suddenly at the age of 91.

- A remembrance by Howard's granddaughter: My Grampa McGill was a very kind and gentle man. My mother took us back to the family home in London after my Dad left in 1942 to enlist in WW II. I remember well how he used to take my brother Brian and me for rides in a wagon. He would pull us all the way to the train station, and we would watch the trains come in. There were still steam engines then, which made it all the more fun. He made my Christmas one year by hand-
making a doll bed for my doll, and my aunts and grandmother made bed covers and clothes for the doll. I loved sitting on his knee while he told me stories. He always had a smile. I missed him when we moved back to Toronto and was always excited when we went back for visits.
