    • The 1861 census says that she was born in Bristol, but no corresponding birth appears in the indexes there. There was however the birth of a Mary Ann Mallett registered in Bideford in the June quarter of 1854 (5b 499). Thomas was from Alwington, near Bideford, and the name and date fit. Mary's brother George may have been registered in Bideford at the same time, although their ages are given as 1 year apart in the census.
