[2] - In 1869, in the North Devon Journal, James Mallett offers livestock for sale, and the owner of his farms, John Darke, Little Marland, Petrockstowe, offers these farms for lease. The farms are described as "Browns, Langaton, and Putshole". This must be when James moves to Cloister Hall. These 3 farms must be the ones occupied by Humphrey before James.

Census 5 Apr 1891 Cloister Hall, Frithelstock, Devon, England
[4] - Cloister hall is very likely the "estate of 1000 acres" described by Edith McCracken. She visited England before she was married in 1895, and "found a James living on the farm". According to the history of Frithelstock Priory, the manor was "about 1000 acres of which the monks farmed 500". The priory was taken from the church in the time of Henry the VIII, and was held by tenant farmers from that time until 1957, when it was sold, along with many other farms in the area by the Clinton Estate.
Census 1 Apr 1901 Cloister, Frithelstock, Devon, England
[5] - All of the surviving children were still living at home in 1901 except for Mary, who by that time had married John Brent Reed and had a family of her own. Caroline was the oldest at 35, James the youngest at 28. Each of them worked on their father's farm in some capacity. James no longer had any Ag Labs, but the family still had one domestic servant.
