Archibald George R MALLETT

-
Name Archibald George R MALLETT [1] Birth 1 Mar 1866 Barnstaple, Devon, England [2, 3]
Gender Male Census 2 Apr 1871 5 High Street, Barnstaple, Devon, England [4]
- Clara's father Robert Gooding Sr. as well as her brother Robert Gooding Jr. lived with them. Thomas, Jane, and John Frayne are with them too, and a General Servant called Mary J Westacott.
Census 3 Apr 1881 6 Victoria Road, Barnstaple, Devon, England [5]
- Annie and Archibald were at home, Frederick was a boarder in the household of George B Goss in Southampton, working as an Ironmonger's Assistant. Bertie was 4 months old and described as a grandson. William was a "Manager in Ironfoundry", Archibald was an "Apprentice to Ironmongery".
Occupation 3 Apr 1881 [6] Apprentice To Ironmongery Census 5 Apr 1891 83 South Lambeth Road, Lambeth, London, England [7]
- Archibald and Margaret did not yet have any children. They were living at the same address as her parents.
Occupation 5 Apr 1891 [7] Ironmonger's Assistant. Military Service Between 2 Mar 1901 and 4 Nov 1901 South Africa [8]
- Archibald served very briefly (248 days to be precise) in the British Army Imperial Yeomanry during the Boer War. He enlisted on March 2, 1901 in London, shipped out to South Africa on April 6, at some point fell off of a horse, developed a hernia, and was shipped back to England on Oct 2. He was officially discharged as medically unfit on November 4. The fall from the horse does not appear to have occurred in battle. His conduct during his service was considered to be "Good".
His attestation papers describe him as being 5 ft 10 in in height, 161 lbs, 39 in chest, with a "fresh" complexion, blue eyes and dark brown hair. When he was discharged some months later he had shrunk in height by 1/2 in, his complexion was now fair, his hair colour had lightened a bit to plain brown, and his eyes had turned grey.
When he signed up his occupation was given as "Joiner", but when he was discharged he was back to being an "Ironmonger".
Census 2 Apr 1911 57 Thorne Road, South Lambeth SW, London, England [9]
- Archibald and Margaret had been married 20 years, with 9 children born and 8 living. The 9th child is unknown. The two oldest girls were working.
Occupation 2 Apr 1911 [9] Ironmonger's assistant. Immigration 18 May 1911 Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada [10]
- Archibald was travelling alone, had not been to Canada before, but intended to stay and become a Farmer. His arrival port was Quebec, but his intended destination was Winnipeg. It isn't known whether or not he had a situation lined up, or whether or not he knew anyone in Winnipeg. His nephew Frederick Harold Mallett had immigrated to Canada the year before, but he was in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan.
Occupation Bef 1915 Saskatchewan, Canada [2, 11]
- One story has it that he had joined the Northwest Mounted Police in Canada, but when he signed on with the military, his occupation was given as Railroader.
Military Service 3 Jul 1915 Saskatchewan, Canada [11]
- When he joined the CEF, his birthdate was given as Mar 1, 1872, while his birth certificate gives the year as 1866. He may have lied to hide his age (49), or maybe it was a clerical error. His occupation was given as Railroader, and his residence was Saskatchewan. His wife's name was Margaret, and several addresses were given for her in and around London, England, beginning with 262 South Lambeth Road.
Curiously, Archibald states that he had 13 years of military experience with the 11th Hussars. The only other record of military experience we have for him lasted less than a year in South Africa in 1901. When he signed on for that duty he stated that he had had no previous military experience. In the 1911 UK Census his occupation was listed as Ironmonger's Assistant and he was at home with his family. Shortly after that he emigrated to Canada, and then in 1915 he signed on with the CEF. It's hard to see where the 13 years experience could possibly fit in with his timeline.
Archibald's complexion was ruddy, his eyes were grey, and his hair was dark brown. His height was not recorded.
Census 1 Jun 1921 268 Good Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada [12]
- Archibald was a boarder living on "Income", (which implies that he was not gainfully employed) in the household of Thomas Simpson. Mr Simpson's mother-in-law Gertrude Goodman lived with them too, which suggests that they may have been relatives of Archibald by marriage, since his sister Henrietta married a Goodman, but no evidence has been found to support the theory.
SW Group 1 UKC 1881 N Death 5 Mar 1927 St Boniface, Manitoba, Canada [2]
- The story within the family is that he was beaten, robbed, and, presumably, left for dead on the road somewhere near a small town outside of Winnipeg. He was found there and was admitted to the hospital in St Boniface, Manitoba on March 1 1927, where he died four days later of pneumonia on March 5.
His wife and children apparently never came to Canada. Did he intend to bring them? Did he intend to make some money in Canada and then go back to England? It appears not to have been a case of his abandoning his family, because his wife Margaret received his pay while he was in the military.
