- Eliza is not living with the family in Brussels in the 1881 census. Her husband's occupation is shoemaker according to the marriage certificate. His residence at the time of the marriage was Shelburne. He was born in Port Hope. He was a bachelor, she a spinster. Selina Mary Lake of Ethel was a witness along with brother William of Brussels. Their religion is Methodist.
In the 1881 census William and Eliza are living in Shelburne. His occupation is listed as "Cordwainer". A William Bloomer also lives with them. No children are listed.
The birth indexes show Rosie, Albert and "Birty" as being born in Shelburne. Birty Ray was born in 1888, and the family is no longer in Shelburne in the 1891 census, so wherever they went, they went between 1888 and 1891. Birty is an odd name. It might be something else, because it is handwritten, but Birty is what it looks like.
It's likely that they have more children, but I don't know where to look. there are a lot of McKees in the birth indexes so it will be difficult to check them all, but perhaps I will check through all of 1889 to 1892. I can also check the death indexes for any of the family. They didn't likely die before 1924 when the death indexes end but one never knows. Marriage indexes are another possibility because they go up to 1914, these children would be of marrying age by then. They are born in the same time frame as FT, and I found his marriage to Luella Burns.
I suspect this family moved to Manitoba with William Henry Mallett. There is a William A McKee, Jeweller, of Deloraine Manitoba listed in the "Central Canadians" for 1901. Two people have told me that a lot of people from central Ontario moved to the Deloraine area. There must have been a fairly close connection between the two families for Bert McKee to be planted in the same plot (owned by William Henry) as Mary Ann in Burnaby, and there seems to be no indication that Bert ever lived in BC.
I found William McKee in Deloraine in the 1891 census. He is by himself, listed as a widower. His age is 31, occupation watchmaker, religion Presbyterian. It makes sense he's by himself because two of his children are with the Matthews in Acton in 1891, I don't know where Bert is.
The Ontario Cemetery Index release 6 has an Eliza McKee in Shelbune. No other details. There are several other McKees there too.
In 1901 the family is still in Deloraine, William (43) has remarried to Mary (33), tape T-6432, under Winchester, third section, P8 L89, family 80. The children are the same as the ones I found in the birth indexes, no more, no less, with the same birthdates. It wouldn't surprise me if "Mary" is in fact Eliza Ellen's younger sister Martha Emily, whose marriage I did not find in Ontario. I have her birthdate as 1868, which is calculated backward from the 1871 census. A person born in June of 1867 would be 3 when the census was taken in 1871 (April), which is the age given for Martha at that time.
From 1930 to 1972 there is an Albert W McKee living at 826 Banning in Winnipeg. He was an Engineer with the CPR. In 1929/30 there was also a B.R. McKee in Winnipeg. I think they are both the sons of William A. Albert W's widow Christiana lives at the same address for 2 more years, gone by 1975. Albert is listed as retired by the 1953 directory, when my Albert would have been 67, the correct age to be retired. I have checked with the cemetery office in Winnipeg, they don't have them in the 3 cemeteries they take care of: Brookside, St Vital, and Transcona.
W A McKee Jeweller was still in Deloraine in 1906.
