[8] - John was "Living on own Means". They have two visitors living with them, Gertrude Hunt, single, 20 years old and born in Chatham, Kent, the same as Margaret, and Henry A Adamson, single, 20, born Ealing, Middlesex, a student at Cambridge.
Census 1901 Culverwell, Bath, Somerset, England
[4] - John was described as a "Retired Jeweller". Gertrude Hunt was again with them, now 30 years old and still single. Her relationship to head was initially put to visitor, but then changed to "niece". She was described as a "Companion".
UKC 1881 Y Note - The surname "Whiffen" has been chosen for Margaret based on the following:
1. In 1891 and 1901 there was a Gertrude Hunt living with John and Margaret in Bath. In 1901 she was described as "niece". Given that Gertrude was born in Chatham, Kent, the same place as Margaret, she must have been the daughter of Margaret's sister or brother (not John's niece).
There was a Gertrude Hunt, 10 years old, born Chatham Kent, living with her mother Mary A Hunt in the 1881 census. Also with the family was Mary Whiffen, 72, unmarried, Mary's Aunt. Assuming that Whiffen might be Mary's maiden name, we find a Mary Ann Whiffen in the IGI born 1836 in Chatham, Kent, the correct year for her age in 1881. Her father was John Thomas David Whiffin, her mother Eliza. We then find a Mary Ann Whiffen, also in the IGI, who married Francis Hunt in London in 1864, which is about right given the age of Mary's daughter Blanche in 1881.
Further assuming that Margaret and Mary were sisters, based on the fact that Gertrude was described as Margaret's niece in 1901, we find, in the IGI, a christening of a Margaret Whiffen born 1826 in Chatham, Kent, father Thomas, mother Mary. A birth year of 1826 is consistent with Margaret's age in each census.
The "Whiffen" connection is further bolstered by the fact that John Mallett's sister Susan married Swan Whiffen, who was described as a "Chronometer Maker". John Mallett probably met Margaret through Swan, both being in the clockmaker trade.
Swan must have been Margaret and Mary's uncle, because in 1871, Mary Whiffen, age 62, was living with him, described as his sister. Swan died in 1874, so Mary probably went to live with her niece Mary Hunt and was there in the 1881 census, same birth year and place as in 1871.
SW Group 1 UKC 1881 N Alternate Name Margaret Mallett Death Aft 14 Apr 1918 [9] - Walter Mallett mentioned that his mother was still living at "92 1/2" in a letter written this date. She likely died in Bath.
